Medigap

Medicare Supplement Insurance policies are sold through private insurance companies. These polices can help pay for some of the costs associated with Medicare. These polices are also often called "Medigap".

How do Medigap Policies work?

*Starting January 1, 2020, Medigap plans sold to people who are new to Medicare won’t be allowed to cover the Part B deductible. Because of this, Plans C and F won’t be available to people who are newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. If you already have either of these 2 plans (or the high deductible version of Plan F) or are covered by one of these plans before January 1, 2020, you’ll be able to keep your plan. If you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, but not yet enrolled, you may be able to buy one of these plans.*

Medicare Supplement Plans help cover the out of pocket costs that Medicare doesn't cover. Medicare Supplement Plans are sold by private companies and can help pay some of the remaining health care costs that Original Medicare doesn't pay for. This includes covered services, supplies, co-payments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Note: You CANNOT have a Medigap Policy if you're part of a Medicare Advantage plan or have Medicaid.

  • You must have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B to buy a Medigap Policy
  • You will have to pay premium for your Medigap policy in addition to the premium for Medicare Part B.
  • Different companies charge differently for the same Medigap plans. Companies can also choose to offer certain Medigap plans and not others. It's extremely important to make sure you have researched all options before choosing a policy due to price & making sure you get the one that fits you best.
  • Any standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable even if you have health problems. This means the insurance company can’t cancel your Medigap policy as long as you stay enrolled and pay the premium. However, if you cancel your Medigap policy, you are not guaranteed to get it back due to medical underwriting.
  • Buying when you first become eligible is important because you will be offered more choices and better pricing

What does Medigap not cover?

Generally, Medigap policies don’t cover long-term care (like non-skilled care you get in a nursing home), vision or dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or private‑duty nursing.

Can I Switch My Medigap Policies?

Medicare Supplement Policies are only guaranteed issue when you are in your 6 month Medigap open enrollment. In most cases under federal law you won't be able to switch Medigap policies unless you live in a state that has relaxed requirements. If you do live in a state with relaxed laws & If the insurance company is willing to sell you a Medigap policy-- Don't cancel your current Medigap policy until you've decided to keep your new Medigap policy. You have 30 days to decide if you want to keep the Medigap policy and will have to pay for both during that time period.
